Two photographs by Galen Rowell were recently named a part of the “Top 40 Nature Photographs of All Time” collection by the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP).
Rowell’s Split rock and cloud, Eastern Sierra, California and his Reflection pond, Denali National Park, Alaska were chosen for the honor alongside photographs from Ansel Adams, Frans Lanting, David Doubilet, Thomas Mangelsen and Jack Dykinga, to name a few.
The Top 40 collection represents a wide range of styles and genres, and span more than 100 years of photographic history. The images were nominated and chosen by members of ILCP, a fellowship of the world’s top professional conservation photographers.
More than 100 photographers and editors associated with ILCP were asked to submit nominations for images they considered to be “the best,” in whatever way they chose to define it. Restricted from self-nomination, the group was encouraged to consider factors such as aesthetics, uniqueness, historical and scientific significance, or contribution to conservation efforts.
“It was no easy task, selecting just 40 images from the incredible nominations submitted to us by some of the world’s greatest nature photographers, but it was a tremendous honor for ILCP to be asked to take the lead on this challenging project.” said ILCP Executive Director Justin Black.
“No doubt, there are other notable and worthy photographs that could have secured a spot in the Top 40 gallery,” Black added, “but this diverse cross section clearly demonstrates the power of photographs to educate, enlighten, inspire, and stir us into action to protect our limited natural resources.”
Many of the images will be up for auction at the inaugural Christie’s International “Green Auction: A Bid to Save the Earth” on April 22, with proceeds to be divided between four environmental organizations, which include: Conservation International (CI), Oceana, Natural Resources Defense Council and the Central Park Conservancy.

Tony Rowell’s image, “Full Moon Rainbow,” was recently selected as a first prize winner in the International Earth and Sky Photo Contest, sponsored by The World At Night and Dark Skies Awareness projects.
Rowell’s winning image, taken from California’s Yosemite Falls on a moonlit night, garnered high praise from the contest judges. “It’s a strong, beautifully executed composition, blending a starry night sky, moonlight, and a magnificent landscape in a most imaginative way,” noted judge David Malin, widely considered the most distinguished night sky photographer in the world.
Rowell’s image was selected first prize in the contest’s “Beauty of Night Sky” category.
Contest submissions came from photographers located in more than 30 countries. The aim of the contest is to bring awareness to the natural beauty of night sky, and to bring focus on the international battle with light pollution.
Submissions for the contest were appropriately received during the International Year of Astronomy 2009. Eligible images had to be created in 2009 and were required to show both the Earth and sky, combining elements of the night against the Earth horizon with a backdrop of a notable location or landmark.
For his winning image, Rowell receives a Celestron CG5 computerized telescope mount.
Three additional images by Rowell were chosen as notable photos, all positively credited by The World At Night (TWAN) members and the contest judges, as stunning and relevant photos to the contest theme, “Dark Skies Importance”:
The first selection and voting was made by TWAN world-wide photographers. The images receiving the most votes were then considered by the contest judging team who selected five winners in each category of the contest. The judges included:
- David Malin, widely considered the most distinguished night sky photographer in the world, TWAN member and consultant;
- Mike Simmons, president of Astronomers Without Borders, TWAN co-founder and contributing editor at Sky & Telescope magazine;
- Connie Walker, director of Dark Sky Awareness project and Globe at Night program, and senior science education specialist at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory;
- Richard Wainscoat, photographer and astronomer at the University of Hawaii, and the chair of International Astronomical Union Commission on Controlling Light Pollution; and,
- Babak Tafreshi, founder and director of TWAN, award winning night sky photographer, and board member of Astronomers Without Borders.

The Compton Gallery at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) will host a photography exhibition by Chris Linder, July 11 through January 2010.
According to the MIT website: “Embark on an expedition to the Arctic seafloor. Through photography and other media, this exhibition in the Compton Gallery portrays the expedition to learn more about Arctic undersea mountains. An international team led by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution plumbed the secrets of the sea, and were captured at work by photographer and MIT alum, Chris Linder.”

Mountain Light Pictures is pleased to announce the addition of Justin Black and Tony Rowell to the stock agency’s expanding line-up.
Recently named the new Director and Chief of Staff for the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP), Justin will be soon based in his hometown of Washington, D.C. While he’ll be busy with new challenges, he fully intends to keep his camera equipment at his side and capture the scenes that stir his passion.
Tony Rowell, the youngest of Galen’s two children, found himself immersed in his father’s photography from a young age. Tony began photographing landscapes and wildlife as he joined his father on various adventures into wilderness areas.
Favoring digital SLR cameras, Tony has developed a passion for astrophotography in recent years. “Astronomy is something I’ve always been interested in,” Tony explains. “I just find this one more way to show the beauty we have in this world.”
Mountain Light Pictures is the home of the Galen Rowell Image Collection: stunning photographs from around the world produced by one of the most influential photographers of all time. MLP also represents a growing list of some of the finest working outdoor and nature photographers.
